Food Essay P2

Could Our Everyday Foods Be Killing Us?

fats and oils with bubbling hydrogen gas.  They then become partially hydrogenated and assume the “trans” fat from.  When eaten, these fats and oils react adversely with the normal fat metabolism process and inhibit the production of important enzymes that the body needs. (Farr)  According to some researchers, consuming hydrogenated oils can be as damaging to the body as inhaling cigarette smoke. (Farr)  Researchers have also stated that these types of oils can be considered a poison to the body.  According the Dorland’s Medical Dictionary as poison is “any substance which, when relatively small amounts are ingested….has a chemical reaction that may cause damage to structure or disturbance of function, producing symptomatology, illness, or death”.  (Mercksource) While it may seem severe to compare these oils to a type of poison it has been found that when a person consumes normal fats and oils the body will take 18 days to break it down.  On the other hand, when a person consumes hydrogenated oil it takes the body approximately 51 days to break it down. (Farr)  With all of this extra additive floating around in our system it is no wonder that people who consumer a high amount of foods with these oils do not have much energy to do daily activities let alone exercise which, then in return leads to weight problems.  These oils have also been linked to other serious conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. (Farr)  Hydrogenated oils can be found in everyday foods like eggs, various types of nuts, chips and cookies.  All the things that we consider comfort food or snack food.
